Your Name. by Makoto Shinkai

Your Name. (Kimi no Nawa.) is a beautiful, emotionally resonant science fiction romance novel written by celebrated Japanese director Makoto Shinkai. Released in Japan in June 2016 just a couple of months before his record-breaking anime film hit theaters, the novel acts as a profound companion piece to the movie, written by the creator himself to explore the deeper, internal thoughts of his characters.

It is a sweeping story about distance, memory, fate, and the invisible threads that connect people across time and space.

The story alternates perspective between two teenagers who couldn't live more different lives:

  • Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school girl living in the quiet, deeply traditional mountain town of Itomori. Constantly frustrated by her stifling small-town life and her strict father (the local mayor), she makes a desperate wish to be a handsome boy living in Tokyo in her next life.

  • Taki Tachibana is an artistic, somewhat hot-headed high school boy living a fast-paced life in the heart of bustling Tokyo, balancing school with a part-time job as a waiter at an Italian restaurant.

Their lives fracture when they suddenly begin sporadically switching bodies when they fall asleep. Believing it to be an incredibly vivid dream at first, they eventually realize the reality of their situation when friends and family point out their bizarre shifts in behavior.

To manage the chaos, Taki and Mitsuha start leaving each other daily notes, rules, and logs on their smartphones. As they literally live each other's lives, a profound, intimate bond forms between them. But just as they decide to finally meet in person, the body-switching abruptly stops. When Taki sets out to locate Mitsuha's rural hometown using only his sketches of the landscape, he uncovers a tragic cosmic anomaly that forces them both to race against time, fate, and their own rapidly fading memories.
