Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy
Under the Greenwood Tree (subtitled A Rural Painting of the Dutch School) is an early pastoral novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1872. It stands out in Hardy's bibliography as one of his gentlest, most lighthearted stories, written well before the crushing tragedies of his later masterpieces like Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
The Romantic Conflict: The story centers on Fancy Day, a beautiful, newly educated schoolmistress who returns to the rural village of Mellstock. She immediately attracts three very different suitors: Dick Dewy, a kind but working-class local carrier; Mr. Shiner, a wealthy and arrogant farmer; and Mr. Maybold, the sophisticated parish vicar. Fancy is torn between her genuine affection for Dick and the social elevation offered by the other men.
The Choir Conflict: Simultaneously, the village is facing a cultural shift. The Mellstock Quire—a traditional group of old-fashioned musicians who play stringed instruments in the church gallery—is being phased out. The progressive Vicar Maybold wants to replace them with a modern pipe organ (harmonium), and he asks Fancy Day to be the new organist, inadvertently putting her at odds with the town's traditionalists.
