Three Days of Happiness by Sugaru Miaki
Three Days of Happiness (originally titled Mikumikaasuto or I Sold My Life for Ten Thousand Yen Per Year) is a deeply philosophical and melancholic Japanese contemporary novel by Sugaru Miaki. First published in 2013, the novel became a cult favorite worldwide for its raw, heartbreaking exploration of existential dread, the value of a human life, and what it truly means to be happy.
It is widely recommended alongside emotional, bittersweet stories like I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and has an equally popular manga adaptation titled I Sold My Life for Ten Thousand Yen Per Year.
The story follows Kusunoki, a deeply cynical, broke, and isolated twenty-year-old college student living in Japan. Having spent his entire life believing he was destined for great things, he finds himself working a dead-end part-time job, starving, and entirely devoid of hope or meaningful relationships.
When he runs out of money for food, a local bookstore clerk tells him about a legendary, shadowy establishment where people can legally sell their remaining lifespan, time, or health for cash. Desperate and curious, Kusunoki tracks down the building. After a cold, mathematical assessment of his future—calculating his future impact on the world, his potential for happiness, and his achievements—the clerk delivers a devastating verdict: Kusunoki's remaining thirty years of life are worth a measly 10,000 yen (about $70 USD) per year.
