Co-author Hans Tikkanen hit a frustrating plateau in his chess career, stuck at a FIDE rating of around 2400-2450. Determined to break through to the Grandmaster title, he designed a rigorous training schedule based on educational psychology.

By applying this repetitive training technique, Tikkanen rapidly absorbed tactical themes, earned his three GM norms in a matter of months, and crossed the 2500 threshold. Axel Smith later formalized Tikkanen’s personal drill routine into this book.

The Method: How It Works

The core principle is simple: It is better to solve the same 1,000 puzzles multiple times than to solve 4,000 puzzles just once.

The training cycle follows a strict mathematical loop, typically broken down like this:

1. The First Pass (The Baseline): You select a set of puzzles (the book contains 1,128 in total) and solve them all linearly. You keep track of how many days it takes you to finish the entire set (e.g., 42 days).

2. The Rest Period: Take a short break of a few days to let your brain reset.

3. The Second Pass (Speed Up): Solve the exact same set of puzzles from scratch. Because you have seen them before, your goal is to finish them in half the time it took on the first pass (e.g., 21 days).

4. Repeat the Loop: You repeat this process for 4 to 7 full cycles. By the final pass, your target is to solve the entire block of over 1,000 puzzles in just 24 to 48 hours, identifying solutions with near-zero conscious deliberation.
