The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure (published in May 2023) is a standalone Young Adult fantasy novel set in Rick Riordan’s massive Camp Half-Blood universe. Co-written by Riordan and award-winning author Mark Oshiro, it marks a historic first for the franchise: a novel entirely focused on a queer relationship, written by two authors who identify as queer themselves.

The story puts the spotlight on Nico di Angelo (son of Hades) and his boyfriend, Will Solace (son of Apollo).

Nico has been plagued by a desperate, agonizing voice crying out to him from the deepest, darkest depths of the Underworld: Tartarus. He realizes the voice belongs to Bob the Titan (Iapetus), who sacrificed himself back in The House of Hades so Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase could escape.

The quest is a literal descent into darkness. Nico, who feels entirely at home in the shadows, must confront his own intense trauma, grief, and internalized darkness. Meanwhile Will, whose powers are entirely based on light, healing, and warmth, struggles immensely as Tartarus actively suffocates his abilities. Together, they have to navigate terrifying monsters, demonic terrain, and a primordial deity while keeping their relationship—and each other—alive.
