"The Social Contract" (originally Du contrat social ou Principes du droit politique), published in 1762, is the political masterpiece of Enlightenment philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. During the French Revolution, the Jacobins under Maximilien Robespierre used Rousseau’s concept of "forcing men to be free" to justify the Reign of Terror, arguing they were purging enemies to protect the collective will of the nation.
