The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli
"The Prince" (Il Principe)—written in 1513 and published posthumously in 1532—is the foundation of modern political science. Written by Niccolò Machiavelli, a disgraced former diplomat of the Florentine Republic, this brief, explosive treatise was composed while he was exiled to his farm, having recently been tortured by the returning Medici family. Dedicated to Lorenzo de' Medici, the book was framed as a gift showing a ruler how to conquer, govern, and maintain a state.
Machiavelli's profound breakthrough was the absolute separation of politics from traditional Christian morality. While medieval philosophers argued that a good king must be a fundamentally good, pious man, Machiavelli argued that a ruler's primary duty is strictly utilitarian: to preserve the stability and power of the state (ragione di Stato). He replaced idealistic political utopias with verità effettuale—the effective, gritty truth of how human beings actually behave, rather than how they ought to behave.
The Historical Model: Cesare Borgia
To ground his theory in reality, Machiavelli points to his contemporary hero, Cesare Borgia (the Duke of Valentinois). Borgia used extreme, calculated violence to pacify the chaotic region of Romagna.
He appointed a cruel minister, Remirro de Orco, to clear out crime and corruption with absolute brutality. Once Romagna was orderly, Borgia realized the harsh methods had bred public resentment. To clean his hands, he had Remirro cut in half and placed in the public square of Cesena one morning, alongside a wooden block and a bloody knife. This horrific spectacle left the population simultaneously "satisfied and stupefied," cementing Borgia's authority without personal blowback.
