The Last Days of Socrates by Plato

"The Last Days of Socrates" is a collection of four classic Socratic dialogues written by Plato (Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo). Written in the early 4th century BCE, this dramatic sequence chronicles the trial, imprisonment, and execution of Plato's beloved mentor, Socrates, in 399 BCE.

More than a historical record, these dialogues form the founding drama of Western philosophy. Plato presents the ultimate clash between absolute truth and political convenience. Socrates is portrayed not as a victim, but as a fearless, radical intellectual who willingly dies to preserve his integrity, demonstrating that a true philosopher prioritizes the health of the soul over the survival of the physical body.

The Narrative Climax: Drinking the Hemlock

The compilation concludes with the most famous execution scene in intellectual history. The prison guard brings in a cup of ground hemlock (a deadly neurotoxin). While his friends break out into hysterics, Socrates calmly asks for the instructions, says a brief prayer, and drinks the poison without a single tremor.

As his legs grow numb, he lies down. The coldness creeps up toward his heart. Just before his eyes freeze over, he uncovers his face and utters his final, enigmatic words to Crito:

Asclepius was the Greek god of healing and medicine. By asking to sacrifice a rooster to the god of healing upon his death, Socrates was delivery his ultimate, parting philosophical irony: he viewed death not as an end, but as a cure that finally liberated the eternal soul from the cage of the physical body.
