The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
Shifting gears from romance to pure, enchanting fantasy, The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a critically acclaimed masterpiece. It won the prestigious Newbery Medal, and while it is technically classified as Middle Grade fantasy, it is so beautifully written and deeply layered that it captivates adult readers just as much as younger ones.
Think of it as a modern classic fairy tale with the whimsy of Studio Ghibli and the emotional depth of Neil Gaiman.
The story takes place in a world divided by a thick, dangerous forest.
On one side is the Protectorate (also known as the City of Sorrows), a gloomy town ruled by a corrupt council. Every year, the council demands that the citizens sacrifice the youngest baby in the village to the "witch" in the forest to keep the town safe. In reality, the council doesn't know if a witch exists—they use the lie to keep the population terrified and easy to control.
On the other side of the forest lives Xan, who actually is a witch, but she is incredibly kind. She has no idea why the people leave babies in the woods, but she rescues them every year, feeds them starlight to keep them nourished during the journey, and delivers them to loving adoptive families on the other side of the forest.
One year, Xan rescues a baby girl with a crescent-moon-shaped birthmark. Distracted by the baby’s beauty, Xan accidentally feeds her moonlight instead of starlight. Starlight is gentle, but moonlight is pure magic. Realizing the baby is now bursting with dangerous, unstable magic, Xan decides she must raise the child herself. She names the girl Luna and locks her magic away until she turns thirteen.
