The End of Loneliness by Benedict Wells

The End of Loneliness (Vom Ende der Einsamkeit) is an internationally bestselling literary fiction novel by German-Swiss author Benedict Wells. Originally published in German in 2016, its highly acclaimed English translation by Charlotte Collins was released in 2018.

Moving away from the high-spice romance or thriller formats, this book is a poignant, sweeping family saga and coming-of-age story that meditates deeply on loss, memory, and the invisible threads that shape our lives.

The Synopsis

The narrative is told from the perspective of Jules Moreau. As children, Jules and his older siblings, Marty and Liz, grow up in a warm, idyllic, and secure home. However, their lives are permanently shattered when their parents are suddenly killed in a catastrophic car accident.

Orphaned in an instant, the three children are sent to a strict, dreary boarding school. The trauma affects each sibling in entirely different, devastating ways, splintering what was once a tight-knit family bond:

  • Marty, formerly a eccentric geek, retreats into cold logic, technology, and wealth.

  • Liz, beautiful and rebellious, spirals into self-destruction, drugs, and fleeting relationships.

  • Jules, who was once a fearless, adventurous child, completely withdraws into his own shell, becoming timid, fearful, and intensely lonely.

During his bleak school years, Jules finds a kindred spirit in Alva, a enigmatic, red-haired girl who is dealing with her own private grief. They form a profound, wordless bond that borders on love, but they lose touch after graduation. The rest of the novel follows Jules through adulthood over several decades as he tries to conquer his deep-seated fears, reunite with Alva, patch together his broken relationship with his siblings, and find a version of his life that wasn't dictated by childhood tragedy.
