The Cambridge Companion to Arabic Philosophy by Peter S. Adamson

"The Cambridge Companion to Arabic Philosophy" (2005), edited by Peter Adamson and Richard C. Taylor, is the definitive, multi-author guide to one of the most intellectually vibrant eras in global history.

Instead of treating Islamic philosophy (falsafa) as a mere "courier service" that preserved Greek texts during the European Dark Ages, this volume firmly establishes it as a highly original, sophisticated tradition. The book systematically maps how thinkers in the Islamic world took Greek concepts (chiefly Aristotle, Plato, and Neo-Platonism), integrated them with Islamic theology (kalam), and evolved completely new schools of metaphysics, logic, and political thought.

The Metaphysics of Existence

One of the greatest achievements detailed in the book is Avicenna's distinction between essence (what a thing is) and existence (the fact that it is). For all created things in the universe, their essence does not guarantee their existence (e.g., the concept of a phoenix has an essence, but it does not exist). Therefore, everything in the universe is merely contingent. To explain why anything exists at all, there must be a Being whose essence is existence—the Necessary Existent ($Wājib\ al-Wujūd$), which is God.

The Status of the Soul

The volume covers the vibrant debates surrounding the human intellect. Thinkers like al-Farabi and Averroes developed the theory of the Active Intellect—a single, cosmic, divine mind that humans connect to whenever they think abstractly. This led to radical discussions about the nature of human immortality, with some texts implying that personal identity dissolves into a collective universal consciousness upon death.
