The BFG by Roald Dahl
The BFG (short for The Big Friendly Giant) is a classic 1982 children's novel written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. It remains one of Dahl's most beloved and enduring stories, celebrated for its whimsy, dark humor, and imaginative wordplay.
The story begins during the "witching hour" when Sophie, an observant young orphan, spots a massive, cloaked figure outside her bedroom window. Realizing he has been seen, the giant snatches Sophie right out of her bed and whisks her away to Giant Country.
Fortunately for Sophie, her captor is the BFG. Unlike the other 9 giants in Giant Country—who are twice his size, incredibly mean, and sprint across the world nightly to eat "human beans"—the BFG is a gentle vegetarian. He refuses to eat humans, instead subsisting entirely on a foul-tasting vegetable called a snozzcumber.
Rather than harming children, the BFG’s life mission is to catch dreams in a net, mix them in jars, and use a long trumpet to blow sweet dreams into the bedrooms of sleeping children. When the other brutal giants rampage to eat children in England, Sophie and the BFG hatch a daring, brilliant plan to stop them—a plan that requires sneaking into Buckingham Palace to enlist the help of the Queen of England herself.
