Summer by Edith Wharton
Summer is a brilliant, provocative novel by the Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Edith Wharton, published in 1917. Often referred to by scholars as the "hot Ethan Frome" (Wharton's more famous, winter-set tragedy), the book broke societal boundaries of its era by candidly exploring female sexual awakening, desire, and class entrapment.
Wharton herself frequently cited Summer as one of her personal favorite works, writing it as a passionate escape while volunteering in France during the horrors of World War I.
The story is set in North Dormer, a suffocatingly small, morally rigid, and isolated New England village. The protagonist is Charity Royall, an independent and fiercely proud young woman who was rescued as a young child from "the Mountain"—a lawless, impoverished squatters' community nearby. Charity was brought down to the village and raised by Lawyer Royall, a powerful but lonely local man.
Charity works a boring job at the local library, deeply despising the stagnation of North Dormer. Her world completely transforms with the arrival of Lucius Harney, a sophisticated, educated, and wealthy young architect from the city who is visiting the area to study old colonial houses.
Captivated by Lucius’s charm, worldliness, and refinement, Charity falls into a passionate, consuming summer love affair with him. For the first time in her life, she experiences intense sexual desire and emotional freedom, ignoring the rigid societal rules of the town. They spend their days sneaking off to an abandoned cottage in the hills.
