Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

We are taking a beautiful, refreshing leap from the dark, high-angst world of modern romance straight into the foundational roots of the romance genre!

First published in 1811 under the pseudonym "A Lady," Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen’s very first published novel. It is a brilliant, witty, and deeply insightful Regency romance that explores the complex social structures, financial vulnerabilities, and romantic realities women faced in 19th-century England.

The story centers on the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, whose lives are upended when their wealthy father passes away. Because of the era's strict inheritance laws, the family estate goes entirely to their half-brother, leaving Elinor, Marianne, their younger sister, and their mother with a tiny inheritance. Forced to leave their grand home, they relocate to a modest cottage in Devonshire.

The heart of the novel is the contrast between how the two eldest sisters handle love, heartbreak, and societal expectations:

  • Elinor ("Sense"): Representing reason, restraint, and social propriety. Elinor falls quietly in love with the gentle Edward Ferrars. However, when she discovers a devastating secret about his past, she suppresses her intense grief to protect her family from worry, choosing duty and composure over emotional outbursts.

  • Marianne ("Sensibility"): Representing passion, raw emotion, and Romanticism. Marianne openly scorns social filters and throws herself passionately into a romance with the dashing, charismatic John Willoughby. When Willoughby abruptly abandons her for a wealthy heiress, Marianne’s unrestrained grief physically consumes her, driving her into a life-threatening illness.

While Marianne openly grieves, she completely overlooks the steady, honorable, and deeply devoted Colonel Brandon, an older man who loves her silently from afar.

Through their parallel heartbreaks, both sisters must learn to balance their core natures to find true happiness and security.
