Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, published in 1991, is a monumental epic that famously defies standard genre boundaries. Seamlessly blending historical fiction, science fiction (time travel), romance, and adventure, the novel launched a massive multi-book saga and a global phenomenon of a television series.

Known for its rich historical accuracy, immense detail, and unforgettable characters, it remains a cornerstone of modern epic romance.

The story opens in 1945, just after the end of World War II. Claire Randall, a sharp, fiercely independent British combat nurse, reunites with her intellectual husband, Frank, for a second honeymoon in Inverness, Scotland. While exploring the Scottish Highlands, Claire visits an ancient stone circle called Craigh na Dun. After touching one of the central boulders, she experiences a bizarre physical disorientation and blacks out.

When she wakes, Claire discovers she has been mysteriously transported back in time to 1743—a volatile era of clan warfare, British occupation, and looming rebellion.

Stranded in a dangerous, primitive past, Claire is immediately targeted by a ruthless British Army captain named Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, who happens to be Frank’s direct, sadistic ancestor. She is rescued by a band of Scottish Highlanders from Clan MacKenzie, who view her with immense suspicion, treating her as an English spy or a witch due to her advanced medical skills and unusual clothing.
