Mr Salary by Sally Rooney

Mr Salary is a contemporary short story by New York Times bestselling author Sally Rooney. Originally published in 2016 (and shortlisted for the Irish Times Short Story of the Year), it was later physically printed in 2019 as a standalone pocket-sized booklet part of the prestigious Faber Stories collection.

Clocking in at just over 30 pages, Mr Salary acts as a masterful prototype for Rooney’s signature themes, laying the structural and emotional groundwork for her later hit novels like Conversations with Friends and Normal People.

The story follows Sukie, a 24-year-old Irish graduate student living in Boston, who suddenly returns to her hometown of Dublin upon learning that her estranged, abusive father is dying of leukemia.

Waiting for her at the airport is Nathan, a distant family connection through marriage who is 15 years her senior. Years prior, when Sukie's mother died and her father squandered all their money in a fog of prescription drug addiction, Nathan took Sukie in. He financially provided for her, protected her, and became the only stable adult in her life.

Over the course of her brief stay in Dublin, Sukie is caught in a psychological vice. On one hand, she must visit her mocking, dying father in the hospital. On the other hand, she is trapped in a house with Nathan, navigating a deeply ambiguous, hyper-charged relationship. They tiptoe along the boundaries of a father-daughter dynamic, a deep friendship, and an unacknowledged, highly intense romantic and sexual attraction.
