Mansfield Park, published in 1814, is widely considered Jane Austen’s most complex, controversial, and psychologically mature novel. While it shares the witty social satire of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, it is significantly darker, quieter, and more focused on morality, social duty, and the corrupting influence of wealth.

The story follows Fanny Price, a young girl from a poor, struggling family in Portsmouth. At age ten, she is sent to live with her wealthy relatives, the Bertrams, at their grand country estate, Mansfield Park.

Fanny grows up constantly reminded of her lower status by her cruel Aunt Norris and her cousins, Tom, Maria, and Julia. The only person who treats her with genuine kindness and affection is her cousin, Edmund Bertram. Fanny grows up to be a quiet, deeply principled, and keenly observant young woman who is secretly and deeply in love with Edmund.

The status quo at Mansfield Park is completely disrupted when two wealthy, charming, and sophisticated siblings from London arrive: Henry and Mary Crawford.

• Mary Crawford is witty and beautiful, and Edmund quickly falls under her spell, despite her cynical views on marriage and the clergy (Edmund's chosen profession).

• Henry Crawford is a practiced flirt who delights in making women fall in love with him. He toys with Fanny's engaged cousins before turning his destructive attentions toward Fanny herself, determined to make her love him.

Fanny becomes the moral anchor of the novel. As everyone around her succumbs to the shallow, manipulative charm of the Crawfords, Fanny quietly resists, seeing right through their polished exteriors.
