Love Story by Erich Segal
Love Story (1970) by Erich Segal is a foundational titan of the contemporary romance genre. Originally written as a screenplay, it was adapted into a novel by Segal at the request of Paramount Pictures to help build anticipation for the movie. The book became a runaway number one New York Times bestseller, capturing the hearts of millions and introducing one of the most famous (and fiercely debated) catchphrases in pop culture history: "Love means never having to say you're sorry."
The novel opens with one of the most famous, heartbreakingly direct spoiler lines in literary history: "What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful. And brilliant. And that she loved Mozart and Bach. And the Beatles. And me."
The story tracks the deeply emotional romance between two starkly contrasting Ivy League students:
-
Oliver Barrett IV: A wealthy, fiercely pressured Harvard law student and hockey player who comes from a long, elite line of high-society aristocracy.
-
Jennifer "Jenny" Cavilleri: A sharp-witted, working-class Radcliffe classical music student of Italian heritage, raised solely by her loving, pastry-chef father.
Despite their wildly different backgrounds, their constant, playful banter quickly deepens into a profound, all-consuming love. When Oliver announces his intention to marry Jenny, his powerful father threatens to completely cut him off financially. Choosing Jenny over his family fortune, Oliver marries her anyway.
The young couple struggles through poverty during Oliver's remaining years at law school, with Jenny working as a private school teacher to pay the bills. Their sacrifices finally pay off when Oliver graduates near the top of his class and lands a prestigious job at a New York law firm. Just as they establish financial stability and begin trying to start a family, tragedy strikes. During routine medical testing, Jenny is diagnosed with terminal leukemia. The remainder of the novel deals with their final, tender months together as Oliver tries to give Jenny a peaceful farewell, culminating in a devastating reconciliation between Oliver and his father over her shared hospital bed.
