Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
Flipped (2001) by Wendelin Van Draanen is a brilliant, heartwarming Young Adult contemporary novel that has earned its status as a modern classic. Written with a unique structural format, it explores the messy, confusing nature of childhood crushes, growing up, and the precise moment you realize that the people around you—and your own feelings—might not be as simple as they appear.
The title refers to how the main characters' perspectives on life, worth, and each other completely flip over the course of several years.
The novel tracks the turbulent relationship between two neighborhood kids from the second grade through the eighth grade:
-
Julianna "Juli" Baker: A fiercely independent, free-spirited, and deeply empathetic girl. The moment seven-year-old Bryce Loski moves into the house across the street, Juli falls head over heels in love, convinced his dazzling blue eyes are a sign of greatness.
-
Bryce Loski: A socially cautious, somewhat timid boy who is completely overwhelmed by Juli's intense affection. For over six years, his primary goal in life is to avoid her, hide behind his popular friends, and keep her at a distance.
For years, the dynamic stays the same: Juli pursues, and Bryce retreats. However, the equilibrium shatters in the eighth grade due to a series of eye-opening events. When Bryce cruelly throws away the backyard chicken eggs Juli thoughtfully gifts his family every week out of a fear of salmonella, she is deeply hurt. Shortly after, she overhears Bryce making fun of her mentally disabled uncle in the school library to fit in with a popular bully.
Realizing that Bryce completely lacks courage and compassion, Juli's romantic illusion vanishes. She decides she is officially done with him.
But as soon as Juli detaches and starts ignoring him, Bryce experiences a jarring shock. Stripped of her constant presence, he begins seeing Juli for who she truly is: an incredibly passionate, unique, and brilliant person who cares about things that matter—like saving a majestic local sycamore tree from being chopped down. Just as Juli decides she is entirely over him, Bryce finds himself completely, helplessly falling for her.
