Find Me by André Aciman

Find Me (2019) is André Aciman’s much-discussed sequel to his brilliant 2007 debut bestseller, Call Me By Your Name.

If you loved the lush, romantic atmosphere of the first book, Find Me revisits those same characters decades later. However, instead of a direct, linear continuation of Elio and Oliver's romance, Aciman structures the novel as a classical symphony split into four distinct, time-jumping movements.

The story focuses heavily on how time, fate, and regret shape our lives long after our greatest loves have seemingly passed us by.

The book moves across different cities, years, and perspectives, using musical terms for its chapter titles:

  • 1. "Tempo" (Samuel's Story): Set about ten years after the original summer in Italy, the book unexpectedly starts with Elio's father, Samuel Perlman. Now divorced, he meets a vibrant, much younger woman named Miranda on a train to Rome. They experience a whirlwind, intense "insta-love" affair over the course of a single day, exploring the concepts of finding profound passion late in life.

  • 2. "Cadenza" (Elio's Story): Moving five years further into the future, Elio is now a successful classical pianist living in Paris. He enters into a passionate relationship with an older French man named Michel. While their bond is deeply intellectual and soulful, Elio is still internally haunted by the ghost of his summer with Oliver.

  • 3. "Capriccio" (Oliver's Story): Set another five years later (twenty years after their initial meeting), the perspective shifts to Oliver. He is a college professor in New York, married with children, but deeply uninspired by his life. At a crowded farewell party, a specific piece of music triggers an intense wave of nostalgia, forcing him to confront his lingering, unresolved feelings for Elio.

  • 4. "Da Capo" (The Reunion): The musical term da capo means "from the beginning." In this brief final section, the narrative loops back to Italy. Oliver and Elio finally cross paths again, attempting to close the ledger on two decades of missed chances and see if their original spark can survive middle age.
