"The Second Sex" (Le Deuxième Sexe)—published in 1949 by French existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir—is one of the most important intellectual pillars of modern feminist philosophy. The book acts as a sweeping existentialist analysis of what it means to be a woman, breaking down how history, biology, myth, and economic structures have worked together to relegate women to a subordinate position in human society.

Beauvoir's foundational thesis centers on the concept of the "Other." She argues that men historically established themselves as the absolute human standard—the Subject, the Absolute, the Default. By doing so, they cast women not as independent entities, but relative to men. A man is defined as a human being; a woman is defined exclusively by her difference from a man.

The Path to Liberation

Beauvoir does not leave women in a state of existential despair; she maps out tangible requirements for achieving genuine human liberation:

Economic Independence: She stresses that no amount of legal or political rights matter if women lack financial self-sufficiency. Working and earning an independent income is the primary vehicle for achieving transcendence.

The Elimination of Collective Bad Faith: Beauvoir acknowledges that some women passively accept their submissive roles because it is easier to let a man make decisions and provide security (Bad Faith or mauvaise foi). True liberation requires both sexes to abandon these safe illusions and embrace the anxiety of absolute freedom.

Reconstruction of Marriage: She envisions a future where marriage is not an asymmetric economic contract, but a free association between two independent individuals who support each other's individual projects.
