Everlong by R. Raeta
Everlong (originally self-published in March 2021) is a hauntingly beautiful, poetic contemporary paranormal romance by R. Raeta (who also publishes traditional fantasy under the name Rachelle Raeta). Winner of the 2022 Readers' Favorite Gold Medal for Literary Fiction, it has captured a dedicated following on BookTok and book communities for its lyrical prose and unique, highly emotional approach to the vampire genre.
Rather than focusing on action, fangs, or dark paranormal thrills, the book reads more like a melancholic, slow-burn slice-of-life romance, drawing frequent comparisons to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.
The story centers on Lily, a lonely, immortal woman who has spent decades completely frozen in time. She doesn’t remember her past, how she died, or even her reawakening. She only knows a few rigid rules for her survival: the sun is a deadly enemy to be feared, words are her only sanctuary, and the park bench facing the playground belongs strictly to her.
Every night, Lily sits on her bench under the stars, writing the beginnings of stories about the broken, abandoned items she finds scattered around the park—stories she can never seem to finish because she cannot remember her own ending. As the decades pass and the city skyline shifts around her, her body remains entirely unchanged, but her immortal mind is starting to decay, mimicking the heartbreaking fog of dementia. She is entirely alone, acting as the fixed pin holding down the hands of a clock while the world rushes past.
Everything changes when Sam de la Cruz takes a seat on the bench beside her. Sam is a young man with a warm smile who doesn’t see Lily as a strange, unhinged outcast. Instead, he treats her with infinite patience and gentle kindness.
What begins as an unlikely park-bench friendship slowly morphs into a deep, soulmate-level bond over months and years. As Sam patiently helps Lily piece together the fragments of her fractured memory, she begins to recall the tragic truth of her past. But as their slow-burn romance deepens, a devastating reality looms: Lily will never age, but Sam is entirely mortal, forcing them both to confront what it truly means to love someone when time is your greatest enemy.
