Emma by Jane Austen
Published in late 1815, Emma is perhaps Jane Austen’s most perfectly constructed and comedic novel. Before writing it, Austen famously joked, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." Yet, Emma Woodhouse remains one of her most enduring and beloved creations—delightfully flawed, wildly imaginative, and utterly human.
Unlike Austen's other heroines, Emma Woodhouse has no financial worries. She is "handsome, clever, and rich," ruling over her father's estate of Hartfield in the quiet village of Highbury. Because she is perfectly content with her life and deeply devoted to her hypochondriac father, Emma vows she will never marry.
Instead, she decides to pass the time by marrying off everyone else.
Her self-appointed career as a matchmaker begins when she takes the sweet but socially unsophisticated Harriet Smith under her wing. Emma immediately dismantles Harriet’s mutual attraction to a respectable local farmer, convincing her to set her sights higher.
What follows is a brilliant comedy of errors, misread signals, and romantic tangled webs:
Emma tries to match Harriet with the ambitious vicar, Mr. Elton, completely blind to the fact that Mr. Elton is actually trying to court Emma for her money.
Emma becomes fascinated by the mysterious, dashing Frank Churchill, fabricating complex romantic narratives about him and another local woman, Jane Fairfax.
The only person willing to check Emma's ego is Mr. Knightley, a wealthy neighboring landowner and long-time family friend, who watches her meddling with a mix of affection and deep exasperation.
