Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Eleanor & Park is a landmark 2013 Young Adult contemporary novel by Rainbow Rowell. A massive New York Times bestseller and winner of the Michael L. Printz Award Honor, the book is widely celebrated as one of the most authentic, bittersweet, and beautifully written portraits of first love in modern YA literature.

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, the novel strips away the glossy clichés of teen romance to deliver a raw, nostalgic, and sometimes painful look at two misfit teenagers finding a lifeline in one another.

The story takes place in a working-class neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska, alternating between the perspectives of two high school misfits who feel entirely out of place:

  • Eleanor Douglas: The new girl at school, Eleanor is impossible to miss. She has a wild mane of bright red hair, wears oversized men's clothing patched together with ribbons and safety pins, and carries the heavy emotional weight of a deeply impoverished, chaotic home life ruled by a cruel, abusive stepfather named Richie.

  • Park Sheridan: A quiet, half-Korean boy who has managed to fly under the high school social radar. He fits in just enough to avoid being bullied, wears black t-shirts, lives in a stable, loving home, and buries himself in his comic books and punk rock mixtapes.

Their story begins on a tense, crowded school bus. When Eleanor stands in the aisle, mocked by the other kids, Park reluctantly grumbles and offers her the empty seat next to him. For weeks, they sit in absolute, awkward silence.

Slowly, the ice breaks. Park notices Eleanor secretly reading his comic books over his shoulder, so he begins turning the pages slower, eventually letting her borrow them. He makes her mixtapes of bands like The Smiths and Joy Division. Through these quiet, shared passions, an intense, soul-saving connection forms between them. They fall in love the way you only can when you're sixteen—completely, desperately, and with the heavy knowledge that the fragile world they've built on the bus is constantly threatened by the terrifying reality of Eleanor’s home life.
