Moving from young adult romantic comedies into philosophical and spiritual fiction, Brida (originally published in 1990) is an early novel by the celebrated Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, best known for The Alchemist.

Like much of Coelho's work, Brida uses a fictional story as a vessel to explore deeper spiritual teachings, ancient wisdom, and the mysteries of destiny and love.

The story follows Brida O'Fern, a beautiful twenty-one-year-old Irish woman who has always felt a deep, unspoken interest in the occult and the magic of the world. Seeking answers to the meaning of life, she sets out to find spiritual enlightenment.

Her journey leads her to encounter two very different spiritual masters who introduce her to two distinct paths of magic:

• The Magus: A mysterious, wise man who lives in a solitary forest. He teaches Brida the Tradition of the Sun, which relies on faith, overcoming fear, and trusting the night. He instantly recognizes Brida as his "Soulmate"—a cosmic spiritual partner—but keeps this secret to let her discover her own path.

• Wicca: A powerful, sophisticated woman who introduces Brida to the Tradition of the Moon. Through Wicca, Brida learns about the ancient feminine mysteries, the energy of the world, and how to find her spiritual gift through dance and tarot.
