A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Prepare to grab the tissues. We are moving into the heartbreaking, bittersweet territory of classic 1990s contemporary romance.
Published in 1999, A Walk to Remember is one of Nicholas Sparks’ most iconic, deeply emotional novels. Set in the late 1950s, it is a tender coming-of-age story about first love, faith, and personal transformation that went on to inspire the legendary 2002 film adaptation starring Mandy Moore and Shane West.
The story is told from the perspective of Landon Carter, looking back on his senior year of high school in the small coastal town of Beaufort, North Carolina, in 1958.
Landon is a typical, slightly aimless teenager who hangs out with the popular crowd and occasionally gets into minor trouble. When he finds himself without a date for the upcoming school homecoming dance, he is forced to ask Jamie Sullivan, the local Baptist minister’s daughter.
Jamie is Landon’s total polar opposite: she wears baggy sweaters, carries her Bible everywhere, cares for orphaned animals, and is constantly mocked by Landon's friends for her quiet, deeply religious nature. Jamie agrees to go with him on one strict condition: "You have to promise that you won't fall in love with me."
