A Room with a View by E.M. Forster
We are packing our suitcases and traveling back to the beautiful, socially rigid world of the Edwardian era.
Published in 1908, A Room with a View is one of the most celebrated and accessible masterpieces by English author E. M. Forster. It is a brilliant, witty social comedy and a timeless coming-of-age romance that explores the heavy battle between strict societal expectations and authentic human passion.
Lucy Honeychurch, a young, upper-middle-class Englishwoman, travels to Florence for a grand tour under the watchful eye of her excessively proper, overbearing older cousin and chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett. Upon arriving at their pension (guesthouse), they are deeply disappointed to discover that their rooms face a dreary courtyard instead of the beautiful River Arno.
Hearing their complaints, a fellow English traveler named Mr. Emerson—a blunt, unconventional, and free-thinking man—and his handsome, deeply melancholic son, George Emerson, offer to swap rooms so the ladies can have a view. Despite Charlotte's panic over the propriety of accepting a favor from "lower-class" strangers, the swap happens.
As they explore the vibrant, passionate streets of Italy, Lucy and George are thrown together in a series of emotionally charged moments. This culminates in a famous scene where George suddenly and passionately kisses Lucy in a field of violets outside Florence. Terrified of the scandal and her own bubbling emotions, Lucy flees Italy with Charlotte.
